A few short years ago, Diamond Crystal, aka the Gallivanting Grandma, traveled to Mexico. While there, she was confronted by a long-time fear of water, which, after connecting with locals and fighting through her fear, she was able to conquer to go on a once-in-a-lifetime snorkeling adventure.

Fear of water doesn't just keep us from unique experiences, though - it can be a real threat that affects millions of African Americans every year. That is why Diamond has officially partnered with Back2theWater to connect with other black women over the age of 55 and share her newfound passion for the water.

New Summer Retreat

In collaboration with the Back2theWater organization, Diamond will be taking a select group of women to Colombia for a 10-day luxury learning experience, during which she and her fellow instructors will walk you through the process of gaining confidence in and around the water while surrounded by likeminded, empowered women.

The retreat will take place in Colombia in August 2025 on a date that will be announced in the coming weeks, and will feature a fantastic itinerary of activities to get you acquainted with the most important swim techniques that could save your life in an emergency.

The Itinerary

Over the course of the 10-day program, you and fellow participants will be gradually introduced to confidence and skill development techniques to break through fears and feel safer around water. The program begins in shallow water with basic safety techniques and swimming strokes before moving to deeper water once all participants are ready.

By the final day of the retreat, organizers hope to have trained participants on how to stay afloat and get to safety in deep water, including in the open ocean. All training will be conducted in a closely monitored group setting with proper safety precautions in place to ensure that you and your fellow attendees are comfortable and ready to learn.

Addressing A Disparity

The Back2theWater organization explains that 1 in 3 black Americans do not know how to swim, and as such, face a drowning rate that is nearly 50% higher than the national average. Those over the age of 65 are impacted especially disproportionately, and are among the most likely to experience aquaphobia, or fear of the water.
