Transportation is a vital factor in enabling economic and social participation for individuals with disabilities. It is essential for access to the community, study, work, medical appointments, job hunting or running errands. Just like other daily living expenses such as food, electricity and rent, transport is paid for by everyone. However, certain costs incur additional expenses for people with special support needs. That’s why NDIS offers funding for transport assistance to individuals who are unable to utilise public transport because of their disability. Let’s have a look at the different options available under NDIS transport and travel in Doncaster.

Mobility allowance

For someone who already has an NDIS plan, the mobility allowance does not apply anymore. Instead, they are provided with funds and support for transport under NDIS. It is important to inform your plan manager about your transportation needs in advance so that they can have it included in your funding. They are specifically interested in those situations where independent travel is not possible. So make sure to let them know if you require training, equipment or aids for using public transport.

Transport funding from NDIS

NDIS travel & disability transportation in Dandenong applies only to a person with disabilities. It does not cover travel for service providers, carers or families and considers relevant taxi subsidies. NDIS offers three levels of support under the transportation category, a fixed amount for each level:

  • Level 1 — This is for participants who simply wish to have better community access and do not attend day programs, work or study.
  • Level 2 — This specific funding level applies to participants who study or work part-time for up to 15 hours every week, participate in day programs, or need regular access to recreational, leisure, or social activities.
  • Level 3 — This level is for individuals who are studying, looking for a job or working a minimum of 15 hours every week, and cannot use public transport due to their disability.

So if you or someone you know is planning to apply for NDIS travel funds, keep the above things in mind and talk to your plan manager about your requirements in detail.
