3 Essential Tips for Preventing Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common and

each year. While UTIs can be treated with antibiotics, it's always better to
prevent them from happening in the first place. As a gynaecologist doctor

have seen many patients suffer from recurring UTIs. That's why I want to share
with you 3 essential tips for preventing UTIs.
1) Stay Hydrated: The first and most important tip for
preventing UTIs is to stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps to flush
out bacteria from your urinary tract. It also dilutes your urine, making it
less concentrated and less likely to cause irritation. Aim to drink at least 8
glasses of water a day, and more if you are physically active or live in a hot
climate. You can also include other fluids like herbal teas and fresh fruit
juices to increase your fluid intake.
2) Practice Good
Hygiene: Poor
hygiene is one of the main causes of UTIs. It's crucial to keep your genital
area clean and dry to prevent bacteria from entering your urinary tract. Always
wipe from front to back after using the bathroom, as wiping from back to front
can spread bacteria from the anus to the urethra. Also, make sure to change
your underwear daily and avoid using harsh soaps or douches, as they can
disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in your vagina.

3) Urinate Before and
After Sex: Sexual
activity can increase the risk of UTIs, especially for women. During
intercourse, bacteria can be pushed into the urethra, causing an infection. To
prevent this, make sure to urinate before and after sex. This helps to flush
out any bacteria that may have entered the urinary tract during intercourse.
Additionally, try to avoid using spermicides or diaphragms, as they can
increase the risk of UTIs.
In addition to these tips, there are also some lifestyle
changes you can make to prevent UTIs. These include avoiding holding your urine
for too long, wearing loose-fitting clothing, and avoiding irritating feminine
products. If you are prone to UTIs, you may also want to consider taking a
cranberry supplement or drinking cranberry juice, as it contains compounds that
can prevent bacteria from attaching to the bladder walls.
