Fundamentals of PC Security

  1. The first and perhaps most important measure are to ensure that your connection to the internet is safe. This can be achieved through installing hardware firewall for companies and installing firewall software for home PCs.
  2. You need to make sure that your router is secure. You can achieve this by changing the administrator password and the administrative account. This arises from the fact that everyone with the same gadget will know the default password making it easy for them to access your network and wreak havoc.
  3. Install trusted antivirus software on your PC.  Ensure that it is configured for optimum protection and is set to scan your system at least once every week. The antivirus software must also be constantly updated to capture new virus signatures at least twice a month. Antivirus software that is not updated is of no use and can end up being harmful to your system just like a virus.
  4. Install anti-spyware and as for the antivirus, ensure that it is correctly configured and set to scan your system at least once a week while monitoring all the time.
  5. Constantly update new security patches for your operating system which are released by Microsoft every month. Your computer must be configured to automatically check for these updates.
  6. Make sure that your wireless network is secure and avoid broadcasting your SSID. You can restrict access to the network based on the MAC address of your computer.

PC security is a very important aspect of your online presence that must be given the seriousness that it deserves. The measures listed above do not guarantee 100 % security but go a long way in acting as deterrence. If you are not well-versed with software issues, you can get instant online help from tech support companies who can fix all these issues for you remotely.
