Using contact lenses is very convenient option as you don’t have to carry the burden of wearing heavy eye glasses. Your outer appearance seems natural and also you get a feeling that you are seeing the surroundings with your naked eyes. Whether it is power lenses or an attractive pair of colored contact lenses, using them is blissful.

In market various types of contact lenses are available but it is important to know which one is the right for you. An experienced eye doctor can determine which the right pair is for you depending on your lifestyle and eye condition.

Two types of contact lenses based on their materials:
  • Hard contact lenses
  • Soft contact lenses

Hard contact lenses
They are healthier contact lenses for your eyes and are being used since 1970. Hard contact lenses are made from plastic or silicone or fluoropolymers. The most common example of this type is rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses. They hold their shape and fit comfortably over the eyes. They allow the oxygen to pass through the lens to the cornea easily. They are the best choice for people having astigmatism or suffering from certain allergies or tend to from protein deposits on their contact lenses.

Soft contact lenses
Most of the contact lenses wearers use this type of lenses. They feel more relaxed as they stay better in place and are also easier to adjust than the hard contact lenses. They are made from flexible plastic allowing oxygen to pass through them easily. The presence of oxygen increases the comfort and also maintains the eye health. They are used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia.

Various other types of contact lenses are mentioned below:

Daily Wear Contact Lenses
These lenses are used on day-to-day wear basis and are removed nightly. They are less costly and are replaced based on the personalized schedule.

Extended Wear Contact Lenses
These lenses can be used overnight also but needs to be removed for cleaning and disinfecting. Most of the optometrist and ophthalmologist recommend them to be used less as overnight wearing can lead to greater risk of corneal infection.

These lenses are the most suitable for users and are not for overnight wear. They are replaced on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. They are recommended for people with eye allergies.

Colored Contact Lenses
These lenses change the eye color or the overall appearance of your eyes. These lenses are available at cosmetic stores but you should not wear them considering just a cosmetic product as they can cause serious infection to your eyes. These lenses are available both with and without power and should be worn only after the prescription from an experienced eye doctor.

Bifocal or Multifocal Contact Lenses
