A SharePoint comes with additional features such as a team, web, document center and a blog. A SharePoint site refers to a collection of pages or apps allowing users to collaborate and share information when working on a project. A site in SharePoint is created by using the template. The template is what provides the basic functionality for the SharePoint site. Some of the functionalities that the template provides include adding or removing some features on the site thereby customizing it.

During navigation, SharePoint can be accessed by navigating the site’s pages and using the site link. Another way of accessing the SharePoint site is entering the complete web address to the site. Each subsite in SharePoint has additional features such as a Home page that allows the user to customize the site by adding or deleting some functions.

When creating a SharePoint site or a subsite, it is important that you know the position of your site in the hierarchy. Some of the basic SharePoint concepts that you need to know include;

Top-level Web site: The top-level web site is provided by the web server. This site is created by supplying the URL of the server without having a specific page name. The top level web site allows the administrator to make any changes on the entire site.

Subsite: A subsite is a sub directory of the Top Level Web site. Subsites allow for authoring and browsing access by anyone with administrative privileges. It is also possible to create additional subsites in subsites. In order to create a SharePoint subsite, one supplies the URL of the server and the subsites without specifying the page name.

Site collection: A site collection is a combination of web sites hosted on a single server and share similar administrative settings. A site collection is made up of a Top-level Web site and a collection of subsites. A web server can host several site collections.

Users with no administrative privileges cannot create top-level sites. The creation of the top-level sites can only be possible if the Self-Service Site Creation is turned on. Once turned on, you do not require the permission of an administrator on the web server to crate top level sites or even a sites collection.

Creating a SharePoint Site

It is not possible to create a SharePoint site if you do not have a Create Subsites permission. This means that the person creating a SharePoint site has to be a member of the site group in addition to having default permission from the administrator.

Importance of SharePoint Subsites

A subsite has a relatively different function for a subsite. For example, when talking about an internal portal, the basic approach would be to assign your help desk and social committees their own subsites. The reason for this approach is because the information from different subsites will hardly be related and relevant to each other. When creating a SharePoint site, it is important to create a subsite when the target audience of the site is different from the main site.
