Because these phones are based on an operating system, software developers have an ideal platform to work on. They have powerful processors and large memory capacities. In recent memory, the smartphone category has seen the highest growth in sales.

You've probably figured out by now that smartphones run an operating system similar to your personal computer.

Google's Android operating system was released after the company acquired Android, Inc. The Open Handset Alliance has now purchased it. Android literally translates to something with a biological foundation that closely resembles a human being. The ARM architecture serves as the foundation for Android. ARM is an abbreviation for Advanced RISC Machine or Acorn RISC Machine, which are both used interchangeably. Android competes with other ARM architecture-based mobile phone operating systems. Microsoft's Windows Mobile and Windows Phone, Apple's proprietary iOS, and the oldest mobile operating system, the Symbian platform, are among these. An Android smartphone is any phone that runs the Android operating system. These are produced by a slew of well-known mobile phone manufacturers. Many cellular service providers also integrate these devices into their networks seamlessly.

Android is made up of the following components:

1. A computer operating system
2. Application software
3. Important application

Android Smartphones use a modified version of the Linux kernel to serve the mobile environment. As a result, it is open source. On October 21, 2008, the Android operating system was released for the first time. Several updates have occurred since then. These updates have mostly addressed security issues or added new features. Android 2.2 is the fourth and most recent version. Froyo is another name for it. It is based on the Linux Kernel 2.6.32. The next version, dubbed Gingerbread, is set to be released in the fourth quarter of 2010. Android phones typically include the following features:

• A wide range of handset layouts.
• SQLite is used for structured data storage.
• Bluetooth, WI-Fi, GSM, EDGE, 3G, and other connectivity options are available.
• The operating system now supports multi-touch.
• Cameras, GPS, touch-screens, and other hardware devices are supported.
• A fully functional web browser is available.
• A calendar, maps, email client, and other applications are included in the box. You could, however, download and install a variety of other applications. These apps can be either free or paid.
• Android offers a favorable developer environment. It includes debugging tools as well as a device emulator.
• Android smartphones are typically less expensive than smartphones with comparable hardware specs but a different operating sytem.

Android smartphones have made a significant impact in their short lifespan. These phones are only expected to have more features and to be more affordable.
