The city of Paphos is a former capital and port town on the island nation of Cyprus. Revered for its nightlife, ancient culture, historical monuments and nationally coveted wines, this burgeoning tourist location enjoys smaller crowds than the larger cities on the island. Those of the new capital, Nicosia and the second largest metropolitan area Limassol attract much of the annual vacation rush. However, Paphos has more than its fair share of attractions and plenty of pristine beaches waiting to be explored, enjoyed and appreciated. In recent years the city has gained in popularity and is growing with each season. The beaches here are the kind you see on postcards and long to stroll barefoot down in the warm Mediterranean sun. Below is a list of the best beaches in Paphos that you must not pass up on your next visit.

Coral Bay

The most secluded and popular ‘locals’ beach on the island is probably Coral Bay. The shores are largely undeveloped employing only one large establishment. The pebble strewn beaches located just north of the city of Paphos stretch for miles along the western coast. For an inspiring experience stay for sunset and enjoy the same magical vistas that original inhabitants did thousands of years ago.

Phaethon Beach

One of the best ways to experience the best of the island is to enjoy one of the many private beaches associated with the hotels on the island. The Louis Phaethon Beach Hotel is a four star family friendly hotel located directly on the sands of the southern peninsula just north of Rikkos Beach. For tanning, swimming and plenty of people watching your paradise awaits.

Paphos Municipal Beach

Despite its name, this location is probably the least beach like of all the items on this list. Mostly a rocky outcropping with steps and a pool style ladder for jumping in, the municipal beach offers a welcome change of scenery as well as nearby amenities that increase convenience and enjoyment. Showers and changing rooms are close by and dining options are within steps of the shoreline. Diving platforms and seated changing areas are also available.

Alykes Beach

Alykes is located in the main tourist area of the island with easy accessibility from Poseidon Avenue. The sands are long stretches of white grain disappearing into the distance accompanied by the shimmering turquoise seas of the Mediterranean. Sun lounges are plentiful, lifeguards are on duty and the water is shallow enough to venture far into the med without worry. Alykes is a very family friendly option for enjoying water sports in a beautiful, safe and clean environment.

These are of course only a few of the options at your disposal. Paphos enjoys a large selection of Blue Flag awarded beaches each verified to meet a high standard of quality and facilities requirements. No matter where you end up, everywhere on the island enjoys one of a kind of scenery that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. So take your time and enjoy this natural wonder of the ancient world.
